Cross River State Shines at 2024 Governor Diri National Wrestling Classic in Yenagoa The 3rd edition of the Governor Diri National Wrestling Classic, held from November 3rd to 10th, 2024, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, was a resounding success for Team Cross River. The state’s wrestlers delivered a stellar performance, clinching a total of seven medals, including two golds, two silvers, and three bronzes, making their mark on one of the country’s most prestigious wrestling events.
Leading the charge for Cross River was Davis Eyo, who triumphed in the men’s 82kg category to win the gold medal. Eyo’s outstanding performance was matched by Preye Dike, who secured another gold for the state in the 52kg category. Both athletes showcased not only their technical prowess but also the hard work and dedication that had been put into their preparation.
In addition to the two gold medals, Cross River State also saw remarkable performances in the silver and bronze categories. ‘Favour Gracus’ took home a silver in the 38kg category, while ‘Moses Edet’ earned silver in the 97kg category, further contributing to the team’s impressive medal tally. Meanwhile, Blessing Bassey (33kg), Promise Okon (76kg), and Unyime Peter (87kg) each secured bronze medals, demonstrating a well-rounded team effort across various weight classes.
The team was led by Head Coach Happiness Burutu, whose leadership and guidance played a significant role in the wrestlers’ success. Under her coaching, the athletes displayed exceptional discipline, technique, and mental fortitude throughout the competition.
Following the tournament, the team was received by Hon. Agnes Atsu, the Honorable Commissioner for Sports Development in Cross River State. Coach Burutu and the athletes were commended by the Commissioner for their hard work and achievements. She praised the team for their impressive performance and their ability to represent Cross River State with honor in Bayelsa. Hon. Atsu also extended heartfelt thanks on behalf of His Excellency Sen.
